Let me preface this by saying a couple of words about Skip Bayless. He might not be the most likeable personality on tv or radio, not because of his attitude or tone or style, but because of his opinions. he isnt like Adam Schein or Stephen A Smith, or Mike Francessa where they make great points but they tend to do it in a badgering “my way or the highway” type of way.
Episode 46 – No Mo Tuck Rule is a post from: Fifth Down

New Rules

players in the open field can not lead with their helmet. (outside tackle box).15 yard penalty plus subsequent fine. Purely judgement call. Hard to identify in real time. Penalizes players for bending down to protect themselves. We are about to see a massive increase in broken collarbones, collapsed lungs, broken ribs, and oh by the way MORE CONCUSSSIONS!. A player who does not crouch to absorb a hit will get laid out Jadaveon Clowney style and potentially smack his head on the turf, hard! which in the winter, gets HARD! this is a ridiculous rule and I think will severely damage the sport. Better way to eliminate leading with the helmet for hitting purposes: do not make it a penalizeable offense, but if the tape indicates and intent to lead with the crown, a fine should be issues. If the head is lowered as a defensive precaution, no issue.

the tuck rule is gone. If a player loses control of the ball in the act of “tucking” it, it will be ruled a fumble. This is the way it should have been, and potentially always was. If not for the “cinderella pot-9/11 season the PATRIOTS were having, this would never have been an issue. The vote passed 31-1 with the ROBERT KRAFT voting against it. Classy! That AFC title game and superbowl should have an asterisk next to it!

The Jim Schwartz rule is implemented, eliminating the disconnect between a coach negating the ability to review a play because he throws a flag on an automatically reviewed play.

the pro-bowl survives!

Rex Ryan will call defensive plays. the hits just keep on comn

Free Agency

Who’s moved!

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/transactions/free-agents

whos still available:

http://www.nfl.com/freeagency

the Ravens

first the trade of Boldin to the 9ers for a 6th round pick. story surfaced that once the ravens decided they would not be retaiing Bolding, Harbaugh called Harbaugh and worked out the trade. team didnt let the market decide the price for boldin. didnt allow teams to negotiate and compete to trade for him. it was a back room deal between brothers, essentially handing jim a consolation prize and a “hope he helps you get one next year”

next, the Ravens have lost Ellerbe, Lewis, Kruger, Pollard, Boldin, and now Ed Reed becomes the newest memeber of the Texans.

I know its hard to repeat in the NFL, but are the Ravens even going to be competitive?

Who do you have more trust in, Ozzie Newsome, or Jerry Reese?

Kaepernick looked nervous and uncomfortable, didnt get back into his rhythm until after the blackout and then the play calling was awful! they had great success running the ball and playing off the read-option and instead they went with basic routes that repeatedly didn’t work. Ravens game plan seemed balanced yet unpredictable. running attack with bernard pierce threw them off. some intermediate stuff, some deep stuff. Jacoby Jones with the deep catch and the ankle breaking moves plus the 108 yard return and still doesnt get mvp. Flacco did throw 3 td’s and make some critical big-boy throws. Jones robbed or justified? Flacco highest paid qb? Sick of Flacco/Eli comparisons. Does Flacco get the same money as Brady, Brees, Manning? younger than the 3, best playoff road win % ever, never missed playoffs, never 1 and done in playoffs, never injured, never missed a game. 11 tds to 0 int in this postseason. top 5 qb’s in the league: GO! Adam: Brees, Rodgers, Manning, Flacco, Ryan Ryan: Brady, Rodgers, Manning, Manning, Brees Worried as a giants fan? last week we discussed the amount of impending free agents and difficult cap decision the ravens were going to have to make, the giants seem to be in the same position, and they are wasting no time at all. Giants release Michael Boley, Chris Canti, and Ahmad Bradshaw. Martalius Bennet is a free agent. Terrell Thomas, coming off of 3 knee surgeries is a free agent. Osi is gone. Kenny Phillips may be cut. Hakeem Nicks is said to be the priority over Victor Cruz. Justin Tuck is a ? Faith in Jerry Reese, or these cuts a product of winning 2 championships in 5 years and the subesquent need to move on from most of the team. dissapointments of 2012 chiefs, eagles, giants, Bills, cardinals, jaguars, lions: all showed great promise before the season, all will be picking in the top 10 come april save for the giants. Cardinals started the season great, chiefs had 5 pro-bowlers. Lions were a playoff team, Eagles were stacked, Giants were defending champs. Who was the biggest dissapointment, who has the best chance to bounce back next year? big names coming on the market: Wes Welker, Calvin Pace, Reggie Bush, Shonn Greene, Rashad Mendenhall, Mike Wallace, Greg Jennings, Dwayne Bowe, Randy Moss, Dustin Keller, Fred Davis, Martellius Bennet, Richard Seymour, Dwight Freeney, Osi, Paul Kruger, Conner Barwin, Rey Maualuga, Brent Grimes, Aqib Talib, DRC, Ed Reed, Dashon Goldson. -notice what is not on my list? No QB’s. Best FA qb’s are Jason Campbell, Matt Moore, and Tavaris Jackson. Other notables that will become available after they are cut or traded: Alex Smith, Matt Flynn, Mike Vick, Calvin Pace, Darrell Revis or Antonio Cramartie, Laron Landry, Jason Jones, Kevin Kolb, Stephen Jackson, Michael Turner, Percy Harvi, Santana Moss, Kenny Phillips, Justin Tuck, Knowshon Moreno, Josh Cribbs. There are more but I think those are the best. 2013 predictions Lions release Titus Young (picked up by Rams), Saints hire Rob Ryan, http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1482116-calculating-2013-cap-space-for-every-nfl-team/page/4

There are more but I think those are the best. 2013 predictions Lions release Titus Young (picked up by Rams), Saints hire Rob Ryan, http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1482116-calculating-2013-cap-space-for-every-nfl-team/page/4</itunes:summary>

Randy, who is suffering from Dan Marino syndrome except that he has played for multiple teams, is regarded as one of the greatest WR in the history of the game, but has never won a ring. While he is not a major contributor to the 49ers this year, he is still in a position to obtain that which has eluded him his entire career. However, between Ray Lewis, Flacco, Colin K, and the Har-Bowl, there hasn’t been much coverage of Moss. Moss himself, realizing this, put out some comments to stir the pot, claiming that he feels he is the best WR of all time, putting him above Jerry Rice. So lets compare the two.
Jerry Rice played with 3 teams, 9ers, Raiders, Hawks. Played most of his career with Steve Young and Joe Montana, 2 HOF QB’s. He is #1 in all time receptions and Yards. 13 pro-bowls, 12 all-pro, 3 Superbowl rings, 2 time OPOTY, pro bowl and superbowl mvp. Played alongside T.O. for a great deal of time in san fran and alongside Tim Brown in Oakland. 2 future HOF players and 2 of the 8 who have over 1000 receptions. Moss, however, is still short of 1000 catches, played with Duante Cullpepper and Randle Cunningham, and Tom Brady for 3 years.
The argument here is that did the fact that Rice benefit from having played with HOF QB’s AND FHOF WR’s, taking the double team pressure off of him, or did Moss benefit from being the true undisputed #1. Calvin is a true #1 and he is on pace to shatter Jerry Rice’s record. Does Moss have a case for being the best or is he just trying to get some of the spotlight.

Rob Ryan
Fired unjustly by the Cowboys, thought he had Rams job locked up until they decided it was better to be stubborn than employed. Ryan lifes the 3-4, Rams have a 4-3 and felt strongly in their personnel. At this point in the off-season, there are few DC positions left. Saints maybe, but the Saints just fired Spagnolo, who was the Rams HC, and Greg Williams was hired by the Rams, so hes clearly a 4-3 guy, so the saints probably dont work. Does Rob-Ryan find employment as a coordinator.

Harbaugh v. Harbaugh
Fire Cam Cameron while in first place, hope that Jim Caldwell, who has never called plays can take over seamlessly. Struggles at first, but executes in playoffs (sorta)
Pull Alex Smith, with the 3rd highest passer rating in the league for a second round guy. This a year after committing and praising Alex Smith.
Fair or Foul?

The Pro-Bowl
-Who cares? Most of the players voted to it initially don’t even play. The biggest stars don’t care about the money because they already make millions. Its a full-pad game of touch football.
-but….it is somehow the most watched all-star game among the 4 major sports, even though the Baseball all-star game actually means something, and the NBA all-star game is immensely entertaining.
By Goodell addressing it throughout the year, and threatening to cancel it because of how bad it has become, he has actually boosted the rating, as more people want to watch the train wreck.

Brady/Bellichek
Is the regular season success enough?
Since winning 3 Superbowls with the help of the tuck rule, Vinatieri’s leg, and a defense that included Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel, Richard Seymour and Rod Woodson among others, the Pats have won their division 7 out of 8 years, yet are 8-7 in the playoffs including 2 Superbowl losses. Brady is now 35, past his prime and his biggest security blanket Wes Welker will NOT be back next year, and the Gronk is becoming a liability regarding injury. Belichek is the longest tenured head coach, and one that is defensive minded, has not been able to rebuild a stout defense since losing his main guys, despite former DROY Jerod Mayo and countless high round defensive draft picks such as Brandon Spikes, Devin McCourtey, Brandon Merriweather, Patrick Chung, Dont’a Hightower, Chandler Jones.

Tim Brown et al vs. Bill Callahan.
Everybody is basically backing up Tim Brown (except Tim Brown at this point). Callahan is putting the blame on Barret Robbins. What people are not talking about however, is the impact on the subsequent life of Barret Robbins. After he disappeared, his life completely spiraled out of control. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barret_Robbins

More trouble in Jerry’s world
Rob Ryan has been fired, replaced by 72 year old Monte Kiffin. Jason Garrett has his power stripped and given to Bill Callahan, who himself is under massive scrutiny. Romo is entering the final year of his contract, and Jay Ratliff, one of their few defensive stars, has been having off-field issues, including his DWI, and confrontations with Jerry Jones. What is it going to take for Jerry to hire a GM and just be an owner. Al Davis was a crazy owner/gm, but he at least was a football guy.

Next week we give our take on the NFL Awards and break down the big game!

Marc Trestman new bears HC
worked with Rich Gannon, Steve Young, Bernie Kosar, Jake Plummer among others. Bears are a team that needs a guy who can get the most out of a QB. Also has ties with Tim Tebow. There were reports that Tebow would head up to Montreal next season to work with Trestman and improve his mechanics. Does he end up in Chi-town? Trestman is coming off back-to-back CFL championships (which by NFL standards probably translates to a 9-7 record)

Mike McCoy
becomes HC of divisional rival Chargers. looks to turn around Phillip Rivers. wsisenhunt as oc!
McCoy OC of broncos since 2009, gave Kyle Orton the best years of his career, then was able to tailor the entire offense around tebow on the fly when orton struggled, then let peyton do his thing.

67% of all players, but less than 10% of HC and QB

Kapernick
set all types of records for rushing. amazing total yards, great numbers, great poise, the future!
Who is more upset with the 9ers win, the Packers or Alex Smith?

Falcons 2 minute drive and Seattles fuck-up
Seattle gets the ball at mid-field after a botched squib. and throws a short out route, then hail mary. they had time! throw it 15 yards and kick the field goal!

Broncos take a knee with 30 seconds and 2 time outs. The ravens just proved on the previous drive that anything can happen. Raheem more screwed up and the Ravens score on a deep bomb.
Broncos subsequently fire DB’s coach, making his scapegoat for the Raheem Moore failure.

becomes HC of divisional rival Chargers. looks to turn around Phillip Rivers. wsisenhunt as oc!
McCoy OC of broncos since 2009, gave Kyle Orton the best years of his career, then was able to tailor the entire offense around tebow on the fly when orton struggled, then let peyton do his thing.

http://denver.cbslocal.com/2013/01/18/broncos-new-offensive-coordinator-has-built-in-familiarity-with-manning/

down to 3 black head coaches. does it matter?
3 def in RG3 and Cam and wilson, 1 maybe in Freeman, and 2 potential in Vick and Trevor Pryce in Oak

Ravens/Pats

pats running up the scoreboard as usual, on the PAT for the 59th point of the game, Gronk gets hurt and breaks arm. WHY IS HE IN THE GAME! pull starters, have some respect for your opponent.

Battle of the Back-ups!
Kapernick vs. Campbell CRAZY GAME BY THE 9ERS! Aldon Smith with 5.5 sacks, just abused the Bears O-Line. Can’t blame campbell. Bears can not win without Cutler,
-who should start? Kapernick went OFF, played amazingly well, but lets not forget that the week before Alex got hurt, he went 18 for 19, a 94% completion percentage!

Jags are just awful, but got something going this week with Henne at the helm. Proves that Gabbert is a bust? Henne threw for 354 yards and 3 td’s with 0 int’s against Houston. Blackmon caught 7 balls for…drum roll….236 yards!! are you fucking kidding me!
